About
Our inspiration is thinking of our future. The problem we are solving isn't just a sustainability issue, it's an issue in the way a standard deviation or 2 of our society think. Seeing world news and local news for decades, we are able to identify this problem viewing not just the success of grass roots movements but also the supply and demand and rise of and fall of businesses.
We chose this problem because we have discovered there is no real point to life other than enjoying yourself and perhaps making a way for your children's children to enjoy themselves, but if the world ends because of humans, it would be a pity we did nothing to try to prevent that from happening.
So we are designing a light source made of life, that should inspire others to care for life as it brings life and sustenance. We hope others see this and think that anything is possible, and that science is amazing and can bring wealth, so eventually more people will become scientists, thus think more logical about how they behave, and in the end care for the future.
This is very personal, more personal than your average teenager's gossip because this deals not just with emotions but ideologies, but even deeper: one small step to ensuring a continuance of human DNA to reproduce.

How?
Our design of a bio-luminescent algae growing system and lamp will maintain a positive environment for the production and growth of bio-luminescent algae and at night can be turned on to function as a lamp using their bio-luminescence.
Information will be sent via bluetooth to any handheld device or computer on the status of the algae and if anything needs to be done, say feeding them, taking out some water and filling in fresh water with nutrients already blended in, a timer or controls, and other cool information in regards to science and algae. A status screen could be added if needed, there is a fan that would turn on at night to create the disturbance in the water to cause the algae to glow, as would the intensity of the bubblers. Bubblers could even be physical towers within the vase for added look or strength if needed to make the luminescence stronger.

You can be great too
Our idea has evolved over several years. The first thought was of how big an impact we can make and thus designed a whole system for a business or public space to reduce their carbon footprint, increase Oxygen in the world, perhaps provide food for people in poverty (if we used Spirulina as well) and bring about more sustainability to the lives of people in the world.
But we realized that could still come along but wouldn't create the impact we wanted nor help the world as much unless we had connections or money, plus after we have success and gives ourselves a name, this would be exponentially more successful.
So then we thought about designing jewelry that holds algae and would still glow at night, but we did not test out the constant moving of a person during the day's effects on the lifespan and life-cycle of the algae. We even thought about having a jewelry box that was half a container of algae and half can be used to store the jewelry, with a light on the inside cover and it could help set the sleep cycle of the algae, with syringes used for the transfer of the algae from jewelry to box, which will wait until we have more research.
In the end, the basic idea we thought of (a lamp) is perhaps going to be the best bet to research and develop first due to it's simplicity and quick ability to manufacture with 3d printing and arduino, and could potentially have the biggest impact based on what we have researched online and seen through social media channels.
We have no physical prototype yet, though we have gone through a few different prototype designs, and we have taken many steps to theorize how we want to impact the world while being sustainable, going through ups and downs and even working on ourselves too.
